SoundScan

Record labels can now access accurate sales information almost as soon as their product flies out of the stores. Labels can now better forecast how a product is going to perform in a particular store or market. Retail sales are monitored on a store-by-store basis. Over 80% of record stores are now supplying sales data to SoundScan. SoundScan's sales information is used by Billboard to compile most of its charts.: its singles chart are compiled with inform' aUon taken from SoundScan and BDS radio detections. This accurate sales information can help record labels analyze when records are being bought in areas with a high ethnic concentration or a significant economic character.
