A funds is a set amount of money, which includes both recording costs and any amounts that maybe payable to the artist as an advance(the term recording costs also include the producers's advance. Whatever the artist doesn't spend on recording cost goes into his or her pocket.
For example,if the recording fund for an CD is $200.000, and the recording costs are $150.000, the artist would pocket $50.000 as an "advance." On the other hand, If the recording costs are $200.000, the artists pocket nothing.
